
CSIC and UNED sign an agreement to provide joint training in additive manufacturing
The Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) and the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED) today signed an agreement to provide a modular training program in additive manufacturing, a new industrial production process based on the printing of polymers and metals that promises to revolutionize logistics. The agreement was signed by the president of the CSIC, Rosa Menéndez, and the first vice-rector of the UNED, Rosa María Martín Aranda.
The CSIC and the UNED will jointly organize, within the call for Continuing Education of the UNED, the new courses of the Modular Program:
Open Learning Certificate Fundamentals of Additive Manufacturing, with a teaching load of 10 ECTS (250 hours)
Diploma of University Expert in Additive Manufacturing Technologies, with a teaching load of 25 ECTS (625 hours).
Master’s Degree in Additive Manufacturing, with a course load of 60 ECTS (1,500 hours).
These three courses will be directed by Ana María Camacho López and Miguel Ángel Sebastián Pérez, from the Department of Construction and Manufacturing Engineering of the School of Industrial Engineering of the UNED, and with the adjunct direction of CSIC researchers at the National Center for Metallurgical Research (CENIM-CSIC), Iñaki García Diego and Carlos Capdevila Montes, coordinators of the Interdisciplinary Thematic Platform of Additive Manufacturing of the CSIC.
Logistics revolution
Additive manufacturing is a new process that consists of building parts directly from the digital model using different printing technologies. 3D printing allows the use of a wide range of materials, including biological materials, although polymers and metals are the best examples. The printer deposits material layer by layer with minimal waste; a single machine can build any part and without the need to invest in additional molds or machines. This manufacturing system could revolutionize logistics through the reconfiguration of the supply chain.
